Sport: sweaty bodies, strength, dedication, team work, personal fulfillment.
This is what sport is all about. Sport can be rough but also aesthetically beautiful like figure skating and ballet. Ballet isn’t technically seen as sport, but ballerinas are without a doubt athletes. Here are four movies dealing with subject of sport.
A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN, Penny Marshall, 1992
Without a doubt one of the best sport movies ever made, “A League of Their Own” tells the story of two sisters, Dottie (Geena Davis) and Kit (Lory Petty) who join the first female professional baseball league. During World War II the owners of the baseball teams, not wanting baseball to be dormant indefinitely, decide to form teams with women.
Before the movie was released the story was little known, but now the female professional baseball league is part of history.
“A League of Their Own” is a bittersweet film about women dealing with a “male world”, and thanks to it great cast (Tom Hanks, Madonna) and a script with memorable lines like “there’s no crying in baseball!” Is now a classic.
BLACK SWAN, Darren Aronofsky, 2010
Winner of one Oscar for the starring role of Natalie Portman, “Black Swan” is an hypnotic tour de force in a production of Tchaikovsky’s “Swan Lake”.
Nina (Natalie Portman) literally loses herself in the part, she can dance the White Swan but not the black one because it’s too far away from what she is.
The movie directed Aronofsky deals with psychology, sexuality, the envy in a closed environment like the theater and and strength. Nina wants to be perfect, but is it worth it?
The gorgeous ballet scenes are opposed with the more raw scenes of the backstage and the real life.
TONYA, Craig Gillespie, 2017
In 1991, talented figure skater Tonya Harding (Margot Robbie) becomes the first American woman to complete a triple axel during a competition. In 1994, her world comes crashing down when her ex-husband conspires to injure Nancy Kerrigan in an attack that forces the young woman to withdraw from the national championship.
Harding’s life and legacy instantly changes as she will always associated with one of the most infamous scandals in sports history.
Margot Robbie is fearless as Tonya, in this movie shot like a documentary that merges tragedy with black humour. Allison Janney who plays Tonya’s mother LaVona won an oscar for best actress in a supporting role for this movie.
BORG vs McENROE, Janus Metz, 2017
It is the 1980 Wimbledon tennis championship. Bjorn Borg is the number 1 tennis player in the world and the undisputed king of Wimbledon. He has won the tournament four times in a row , a fifth consecutive time would be a world first.
However, a new face has appeared in the tennis world and presents a serious threat to Borg’s title hopes : John McEnroe.
The match between Borg and McEnroe is probably the most famous match in the history of tennis. Shia LeBeouf, one of the best actors of his generation, is simply amazing as the ofter angry John McEnroe and the movie is a great movie that tells the story of two people at the top of the world and how much hard is living in that kind of situation.
